How to handle to the Academic Honesty Compliance Journal

Procedure

  1. At the end of the class, you need to go to the “Academic Honesty Verification” journal in week 3.
  2. Click on “View X journal entries” just like you would to grade regular journals.
  3. If the student has put his or her name in the journal, assign the student a 100% for the grade (i.e. completed).
  4. Although this grade is not calculated into the course grade, it does show up in the Moodle gradebook when you click on “Grades” in the administration block on the left. This makes it easy to assess which students did not complete the compliance journal.
  5. If the student did not enter his or her name in the journal, then you should email the student with the following message:

You have not completed the “Academic Honesty Verification” journal in week 3 of (enter class name). Since it is quite common to overlook a detail like this in the last week of a class, I am emailing you to request that you complete it immediately. If you do not sign the journal within 48 hrs., I must assume that you did not believe you could report compliance. In that case, please submit the journal with an explanation of your situation. If you did not comply with the academic honesty standard, your situation will be presented to the ethics committee to sort out the best action. That action could range from a warning to dismissal from the school as per the DCC Catalog. If you do not respond in any way, your grade will be reported as an "F" for the class.

  1. If a student emails you explaining some type of academic dishonesty, please contact Mark Worley at mworley@dallas.edu or 800-688-1029 ext. 152 to report the situation. Mark keeps track of all reports of plagiarism and other issues of academic honesty. What might look like a minor infraction might be the third time it has happened. Mark can know that and respond accordingly.
  2. Mark will ask you what course of action you would recommend given the circumstances you know of the situation. The DCC Handbook states these possibilities:
    1. reprimand
    2. disciplinary probation
    3. a zero for the assignment
    4. failing the course
    5. an “XF” for the course
    6. suspension from the college, and/or loss of credit in the course or courses where dishonest work or inappropriate behavior was done
  3. Assigning a grade. Do not allow this issue to keep you from submitting class grades. You should still plan to submit class grades to the faculty portal by one week after the class is completed. Submit an F for the student in question. If the situation gets resolved, you will simply submit a grade change form for the student.
