DCC Virtual Classroom: Getting Started
(Elluminate)

1.    Things you will need:

a.    Best choice for audio: a computer headset.

b.   Good choice for audio: earphones plus a microphone. (Note: if you use this setup, please be in a quiet room or your microphone will bleed highly irritating noise into the conference.)

c.    Alternate choice: call in with a telephone (do not use speakerphone). A toll-free number will be provided.

2.    Go to http://www.elluminate.com/support/ and follow the three steps to get set up for your first web conference on Elluminate:

a.    Be certain you have the correct Java software

b.   Go to the “Configuration Room” to be sure your system can connect, configure audio, and set your connection speed. (Note: If you have a Mac and nothing happens when you try to go to the configuration room, this page will tell you how to fix it.)

c.    Get oriented. Please review the “Online Orientation” and view the “Recorded Introduction (about 6 minutes).” You can also print out the “Quick Reference Guide” to have a handy reference for later.

3.    Click the link to go to the DCC Virtual Classroom.

a.    You will be asked to enter your name for the session. Please use your real name (not a screenname), so your instructor will recognize you.

b.   Click the “Login” button.

c.    You will see Java start and a download will begin. Then your computer will connect to the session.

4.    If you have problems with your audio, you can use the “Chat” box to communicate with others in the room while you are resolving the audio issue.

a.    It is possible that your audio was working fine when you did the initial set-up, but fluctuations in your internet bandwidth could change it.

b.   The best immediate fix if you have audio problems will usually be to use your phone to call the conferencing number and join the session that way.

5.    Using the webcam

a.    Different sessions will require a webcam: e.g. If you do a presentation as a part of your class.

b.   In other sessions, the webcam may be optional. We want to use it when possible, because it helps us all get to know one another better.

c.    In some cases, the webcam puts so much load on your internet connection that it reduces the effectiveness of the rest of the session. In that case, you will probably want to close down the webcam.

d.   Set up your webcam by choosing “ToolsàVideo.” Choose “Windowà Video” to see the video streams.

6.    About the DCC Virtual Classroom

a.    This virtual classroom is provided by Elluminate. The DCC virtual classroom can have up to 15 people in conference together at any given time. You can get your own virtual room for FREE that can unite up to three people at once. This is a great way to collaborate with fellow-students or practice for a presentation. Check it out here.

b.   Please do not enter the DCC Virtual Classroom more than 15 minutes before your scheduled meeting time. Like any other room on campus, this room will be scheduled for other classes. Entering at the wrong time would be like walking into the wrong classroom and interrupting another session.
